Union Blues! (0 for 2)

Filed under: Acting Journey — Don @ 5:03 pm

Me Sad!Well, this is sad! I sent an email to the people at Legion Films just to let them know that the paper work for SAG needs to be in 3 or 4 weeks before the shoot. I always do this now because some producers don’t know and send it in late, and then the shoot is delayed. Well this is the email I got back.

Thank you for making us aware of your SAG status and the need to file paperwork with the union. In our excitement to cast you in this film, we overlooked your contractual obligations to SAG. The producers elected to make this film a non-union project. We have not had good experiences with SAG and made the decision in August that this film would be non-union.

We apologize for you having to clear your schedule for that weekend. We were excited to have you in the film and if you had auditioned for us, we would have recognized that you were part of the union on your cast application. When the decision was made to go non-union, we pulled all of the SAG actors from the pile and filed them for future consideration. We did not consider one SAG actor for this film.

Sorry about this. We wish we recognized your SAG status before we offered the role.

If and when we do a SAG film, we will most certainly contact you again. We apologize for this inconvenience to you.

Oh well, another SAG causality. I have lost many gigs due to my union affiliation. If it was not for the fact that I got some major gigs this year with ‘Chatham‘ and ‘Brotherhood‘ I would be wondering if it was a good idea to join. In the end I still think it is, by my resolve is shaken some. I still have two gigs coming up in October/November so all is not lost. Plus I am very curious and optimistic to see what fate has in store for me behind door 3, the next to open.

One door closes, another opens!

One Door Closes
Well, I found out some disappointing news earlier this week. In an earlier post (here) I had talked about how “The Dunwich Horror” was going to be done as a SAG film which would have meant that I could appear in it. But unfortunately I got a call yesterday from the director saying that after trying to work out the problems with the union contracts they just could not make it work. So sadly, this film will be non-union and thusly I can not appear in it. I love working with Richard Griffin and I think he is a very talented director I so am sad to miss out on yet another of his movies. Also I am sad because I am a big H.P. Lovecraft fanboy and this film is based on one of his books. It is a little goal of mine to be involved with as many Lovecraft inspired movies as possible. Oh well, I am sure someday Richard and I will work together again. Soon I hope.

Another Door Opens!
So after getting this disappointing news during the day at work I went home with a little less vigor than usual. But when I got home I got an email from Aaron Vnuk of Legion Films. He offered me a role in one of his upcoming movies called “The Last Day”. There are two very cool things about this. The first is that I did not even audition for it. I got this gig because Danielle Lozeau the Legion Films production coordinator and actress has worked with me in the past on a movie called “Pretty Dead Things“. She put in a good word for me and because I have built up a bit of a good reputation over the past years that cinched it. The second cool thing is that they also offered my good friend William DeCoff a role, in fact the leading role. Mr. DeCoff and I have been in like six productions together now. We almost seem to be an acting team like Damon and Affleck, Karloff and Lugosi, or Stiller and Wilson, etc.. Also since this shoot will be over two hours away, it will be great to share a car ride with a friend.

‘Tis all for now!

Working on my reel!

Filed under: Acting Journey — Don @ 9:48 pm

Well, I have been working on my “reel” on and off for about a year now. A reel is a dvd (in days of old it was an actual film reel, thus the name) with some clips of acting you have done in film and tv. It is used mainly as a tool in the pursuit of finding an agent. You usually try and make it a little fancy with music and an entertaining intro and it should never be too long — just a couple of minutes really. Anyway, I had stopped working on it since I did not have copies of some of my best stuff including the more significant things that might actually catch the attention of an agent. Namely, the scene with David Carradine in ‘Chatham‘ and my scenes from the ‘Brotherhood‘ series. But in the interest of trying to have something at hand I did finish it for now with some fun scenes from some independents that I worked on. I entered into the actors reel competition on the Ourstage website to see how it does. Anyway, let me know what you think about it? Does it look ok?

More work for Brotherhood!

Filed under: Acting Journey — Don @ 7:48 pm

BrotherhoodAs I was out walking last week I began thinking about my life and my acting and all of a sudden I got this feeling that something good was on the way. It was a very cool feeling and I was enjoying myself. It was a beautiful day and as I was feeling healthier and more fit than I have in a while, and I was enjoying this good vibe I had about the future. Just as I was nearing the end of this three mile walk (trying to do it every day) my cell phone rang. It was post production for the Brotherhood series and could I come in and do some ADR for my episode — Well yes I can! ADR or Looping is done in post-production to replace any sound problems that may have occurred during the shoot. It turns out that the mic covering me did not pick up well and I had to re-do some of the dialog of my scene. This is the another part of the work for an actor and is paid just like the day of shooting. So I was very happy to get some more work and to be involved further with the show. By the way, the show starts on September 30, and my episode should be out around the first week of November. Anyway it felt very cool to feel that something good was coming and then almost immediately have it happen. Creepy!

Also I just noticed my buddy William DeCoff made the trailer for the new season — check it out here. He plays a cop and gets clobbered by one of the main characters just after the words “And the Crimes” appear. I just called him to let him know — made his night.

‘Tis all for now!
