Excellent News!
So I am so pumped right now. I just got an email from the director of ‘Route 1’ asking me to play a lead role in the privately funded TV pilot that I auditioned for last week. It is going to be filmed on HD and the locations will be in parts of Maine and Massachusetts. I just got the full script and it looks really great, and very funny. I think this one is going to be very cool. Another thing that I am excited about with this project is that I am cast in a starring role. This show revolves around the crazy adventures of these two friends, and I am one of the friends. Getting a lead role is hard for me simply because people just don’t write that many scripts where the lead character is a short heavy guy; people with my body type usually can only expect to play minor and major supporting roles most times. This is why Danny Devito is my hero because he broke through that barrier and moved into leading roles, and he is even 4 inches shorter than I am. Some other actors who have had starring roles even though they did not fit the cookie cutter leading man body type are: Michael J Fox 5’4.5”, Peter Falk 5’6” and a Glass Eye, Joe Pesci5’5”, Robert Blake 5’4”, Dudley Moore 5’2”. I love the internet, it so easy to find information on any subject even short actors.
‘Tis all for now.
Hey, Don, CONGRATULATIONS!! That is so freaking awesome! Wonderful! Way to go! Party!

Very cool! I’m really happy for you. This is a big break. I understand about the limited roles for actors that fall into a certain type. I have the height for lead roles but I always felt my ethnicity limited me to getting arrested on cop shows. I started writing the low budget screenplay. Should take a few months but I’ll get it done. Good work Don.

Good for you Don! You’ve got the right idea — be so danged good that they have to cast you, regardless of what the typical look would be! Congrats!

Thanks,

Big congrats on the role! That’s awesome.
Don’t forget Paul Giamatti. Definitely not the leading man type. Or Richard Dreyfuss. Or me. Not that I’ve gotten the leading man role recently.

[…] Also I have heard from the director/writer of Route 1 and except for one minor hitch (they won’t be using HD but 24p instead), everything else is going along smoothly and he told me things with getting the union squared away are going good. […]

[…] The first short is an Emerson College student film about a drunken man who makes a very tragic mistake. I won’t tell you the end right now, but I may have a clip in a few months I can put up on the site. I was called by a good acting friend of mine called Michael Clark who was in the movie Swink with me. In that movie he played a sort of twisted science nerd who happens to work for the mob; he nailed the role and was a pleasure to watch on screen. He is currently producing this student film and called me in to play the lead. Very cool, as I stated in an earlier post they don’t write too many lead roles for guys with my body type, but when they do I really try and get them if I can. This movie will be filming this week, and I am looking forward to it as it will have some very fun challenges like trying to sell “drunk” and also dealing with rage and remorse. […]
