This weekend I have experienced another first in acting. What I mean by a ‘first’ is the first time I experience a certain type of scene or activity on my acting journey. For example I achieved a first when I had my first death scene this summer. I was mauled by a scaly fish monster; lots of fun that. I always enjoy when a ‘first’ happens because it just seems like something to remember and also it feels like I am checking of a list of things that actors do. This weekend I achieved another first in that I had my first acting while driving scene. I had to drive a ford explorer that was made over to look like a police vehicle. This was a point of view (POV) shot, meaning the camera was showing what the prisoner in the back of the vehicle was seeing. The cop/actor in the passenger seat was delivering his lines while looking back the whole time; I delivered my lines to the camera through the rear view mirror. I think it will be an interesting shot. The challenge of course was to not drive the vehicle into a tree or hit another parked car while delivering my lines. It was challenging and fun, and the driving was pretty easy this time because we where on a long driveway, and not out on the road. My next scene coming up next week does take place on the road, so at least I got some practice before the big challenge. One funny moment happened when I was just sitting there in the drivers seat waiting for the next take. I was kind of spacing out; thinking about my lines and the scene when I noticed the blue lights flashing on the wall and all of a sudden I got that ‘Oh Shit!’ feeling like when I see those lights coming up behind me on the highway. Then I remembered in an instant that they were my blue lights and I laughed my ass off.
