Two new gigs!

Filed under: Acting Journey — Don @ 10:22 am

Well I know I am repeating myself by saying networking is king in the business of acting but I need to say it again because I just got two new gigs without having to go looking for them. That’s right they called me and O’ what a feeling. The first is a student short film called “Caught” and the other is an independent short called “Paulie”. I discussed networking here.

The first short is an Emerson College student film about a drunken man who makes a very tragic mistake. I won’t tell you the end right now, but I may have a clip in a few months I can put up on the site. I was called by a good acting friend of mine called Michael Clark who was in the movie Swink with me. In that movie he played a sort of twisted science nerd who happens to work for the mob; he nailed the role and was a pleasure to watch on screen. He is currently producing this student film and called me in to play the lead. Very cool, as I stated in an earlier post they don’t write too many lead roles for guys with my body type, but when they do I really try and get them if I can. This movie will be filming this week, and I am looking forward to it as it will have some very fun challenges like trying to sell “drunk” and also dealing with rage and remorse.

The second one is about a man who finds silver linings in all the dark clouds. He comes into a bar and tells the tragic tale of his bad day, but finds good in all of it. A very cool concept and also very cool that I play Paulie the lead role. I was called by a guy called Peter Alberti who I met on the set of “The Forest of Black Fathom” in which I had a small part last year. He was helping to produce and film that movie and also wrote the original musical score for it. He and I have been trading emails on and off and he just sent me a very cool email a short time ago invited me to be the lead in his new movie that will start filming in 2007. They asked me if I knew anyone that could play the other leading role in the movie and I pointed them to my good friend William DeCoff lets hope he fits their vision and I get to work with him again.

All and all it has been a good couple of weeks so far!

‘Tis all for now!

  1. Whew! I found your blog the other night and have spent as much time as I could at it until I was able to read the whole thing. I didn’t realize there was such a rich world of blogging actors out there, and I’m glad yours was the first I read. Being in Mass it was both relevant to my own journey and inspirational as well. Allow me to invite you to be the first to my own blog. Hopefully we’ll end up on a set together soon!

  2. Hi Don,

I’ve finally had the opportunity to catch up on the last 3 weeks of your blog.

I am so happy for you! Congratulations on all of your recent successes, most especially getting two lead roles without having to audition for them! Wow! That is amazingly wonderful!

  3. […] Also, I am very happy to report that my good friend William DeCoff is going to be in another movie with me in January. I talked about the movie in an earlier post and it is called “Paulie”. I play the lead role of Paulie and William will be playing the character Lou that is the straight man role to my funny man role. I met William on the set of movie 4 years ago, and he has been a good friend ever since. This will be the fifth movie we have acted in together. I am looking forward to the shoot. […]

  4. […] This Sunday was a blast. I went to a table read for the movie “Paulie”. Table Read is a film production term that means we all sit around the table and read through the script, each actor reading his part in turn and someone selected from the crew to read the scene descriptions. It is a very fun process which sounds a lot like a radio play; very cool. Since my good buddy and colleague William Decoff is co-starting in this film we car pooled together and had a chance to catch up on current events and shoot the bull on the way into the meeting. This was also a chance for the cast and crew to meet each other and get to know each other a little bit. I was very happy to find that this was an excellent group of people all very committed and excited about making ‘Paulie’ a reality. Everyone had great helpful comments on the production and the script, and I think we got a very solid starting place as we move into filming next Saturday. All and all it was a great day, the only bummer was the Patriots loosing to the Colts. I ended the day/night hanging out with some friends to watch the new Harry Dresden show on the sci-fi channel. I have not read the books by Jim Butcher but my friends are big fans and it made watching the show all the more fun. […]

  5. […] Well, I turned 44 on Monday and I had a nice birthday present. The “Living Weapon” which is an episode of the PBS program “American Experience” aired on my birthday and I was in it. I am only visible for about 3 seconds but it was cool because I love the history shows that are on PBS and the History Channel and I was glad to play a small part. I have a post about the show here and in a couple of weeks the full show will be available on-line here if you want to see it. I appear in the first five minutes so don’t blink to early. Another nice present was that we had the first shooting day for “Paulie”. My good buddy William DeCoff also plays a leading role in the movie and it was fun day being able to work with him again. I still have another couple days shoot left on this project and I am looking forward to it. Lastly in a post back in August of 2006 I talked about hitting my head on a post during a shoot. The director sent me the clip and I turned it into an animated gif file. I hope you find it as amusing as I do. You can read about the experience by clicking here. […]
